In March 2020, major Democratic primary candidates abruptly withdrew, paving the way for Joe Biden's nomination despite early losses in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada, and only a win in South Carolina. This shift, driven by fears of Bernie Sanders' potential socialist nomination leading to a general election defeat against Donald Trump, saw influential donors and insiders rally around Biden, a perceived moderate. This maneuver required the forced exits of Biden's stronger leftist rivals, even as Biden showed signs of cognitive decline. Rumors of a deal suggested the Bidens handled ceremonial duties while real power lay with Obama's advisors, who stayed active in Washington. Facing a looming Trump victory and Democratic losses in Congress, power brokers on July 21 allegedly threatened Biden with a funding cut and possible invocation of the 25th Amendment unless he endorsed Kamala Harris.
