The Republican Party has intensified its criticism of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, over discrepancies in his military record, specifically regarding his service in the Army National Guard. The scrutiny escalated after Walz was named as Harris’s vice-presidential pick, with GOP leaders questioning whether Walz misrepresented his military service during the Afghanistan war. The controversy centers on Walz’s claims of serving in a combat role, despite never being deployed to war. Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), chair of the House Armed Services’ Military Personnel subcommittee, sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, inquiring whether Walz’s alleged embellishments amount to “stolen valor.” The issue gained further traction after a 2018 video surfaced in which Walz suggested he carried weapons “in war,” a statement now deemed misleading. In response, the Harris campaign has moved to contain the fallout, acknowledging Walz “misspoke” and updating his military biography on the campaign’s website. Despite the campaign's efforts to clarify Walz’s service record, Republicans continue to attack his credibility, accusing him of abandoning his unit before it was deployed to Iraq in 2005. The GOP’s focus on Walz’s military record forms a key part of their broader strategy to undermine the Harris-Walz ticket as they rally against the Democrats’ momentum following Walz’s selection as the vice-presidential candidate.
