29:10Now PlayingState DFL and GOP lawmakers outlined a plan using state Legacy Funds, which are generated through a portion of the statewide sales tax, to invest in the production of motion pictures. According to House proponents Rep. Dean Urdahl, R-Grove City, and Rep. Phyllis Kahn, DFL-Mpls., anywhere from $10 to $30 million of the funds designated for the arts could be directed to film production to yield additional state revenue. They presented their plan to the media Wednesday, March 6.
Also during the press conference, Senator David Tomassoni, DFL-Chisholm, explained that the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) invested $200,000 in the movie "North Country," and the production work generated over $1 million dollars for the local economy. Producer Ralph Winter said film producers are constantly searching for snow, and knowing that the State of Minnesota would be a co-investor would be a tremendous advantage for locating productions.
