3:28Now PlayingThe Prison Population Task Force is charged with finding solutions to Minnesota's growing prison capacity problem. In an interview with Producer Jon Brune before the October 21 meeting of the task force, co-chair Senator Ron Latz, DFL-St. Louis Park, spoke about a state prison population that already exceeds capacity by 500 inmates and is projected to increase even more in the coming years.
"Part of the problem is right now they're being housed in county workhouses. County workhouses don't have the kind of facilities and especially don't have the kind of programming that's available to persons in the state prisons," Latz said. He further explained that while counties are currently finding ways to house state inmates, permanent solutions are needed. "Even now we're bumping up against their currently available capacity for that too. So once we run out of space there, then what do we do?"
According to Latz, a wide range of options are available to explore the prison population issue. He is hopeful that at some point the task force will be able to come to a consensus. The next scheduled task force meeting will be November 18 in Room 10 of the State Office Building.
