7:27Now PlayingIn 2005, Congress enacted the Real ID Act, which requires states to comply with federal standards when issuing sources of identifications, such as drivers licenses. In Minnesota, standard drivers licenses do not meet the federal standards, but enhanced identification cards that do comply can be purchased for an additional fee.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has indicated that in the future, possibly as soon as 2018, all citizens will need a federally-approved identification card to board a plane. Minnesota drivers licenses, as currently issued, do not meet that standard.
A special legislative task force has been created to examine the Minnesota's adoption of the Real ID, and during the January 14 meeting, legislators raised some key issues.
