2:28Now PlayingMinnesota State Demographer Susan Brower addressed the Legislative Commission on Pensions and Retirement Tuesday, February 6, and offered some difficult news about the trends and forecasts for public employment in Minnesota.
Her presentation demonstrated the impacts of demographic trends due to the aging of the population, the resulting shifts in the labor force and the growing racial and ethnic diversity in the state.
"These demographic trends will alter the absolute and relative size of population groups and require deliberations about whether and how the state should shift its policies, its programs and its resources," Brower said.
Senator Warren Limmer, R-Maple Grove, questioned the "doom and gloom scenario” of the presentation, remarking, "I can understand where you're arriving at these figures, but that’s not to say that we couldn't change the outcome if we purposely decided to make certain policy changes in Minnesota."
