DFL, GOP Senators Offer Proposals to Address Gun Violence

DFL and GOP lawmakers propose legislation that would require universal background checks for gun sales and mandate reporting for lost or stolen guns. The measures were outlined at a Capitol press conference Monday, March 12, by Senator Matt Little, DFL-Lakeville, Senator Paul Anderson, R-Plymouth, Senator Scott Jensen, R-Chaska, and Senator Susan Kent, DFL-Woodbury.

The lawmakers said they were inspired by the recent efforts of high school students since last month's tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Calling it a moment that demands action, Senator Little said, "Our young students aren't willing to accept the same tired old excuses for doing nothing, and neither should we."

While noting that enhancing school safety is an essential part of the discussion, Senator Jensen said that more comprehensive discussion about gun violence is necessary. "I think the four of us stand before you today because we also hear the deafening silence of a lack of conversation in the halls of Capitols around the nation."

Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, R-Nisswa, released a statement shortly after the press conference. "Making our schools safer for Minnesota kids is a priority for Republicans. We can all agree on increasing the security of school buildings and improving mental health resources for students. There is no time to waste on ideas that don't work, or have no chance of passing the legislature this year."
