34:53Now PlayingOn a 34-32 party-line vote, the Minnesota Senate gave its final approval Thursday, May 3, to the Republican tax plan. The measure, according to Senate Tax Chair Roger Chamberlain, would reduce income taxes for 82 percent of Minnesota families, prevent tax increases for nearly all Minnesotans and cut the lowest income tax bracket by a quarter of a percent. It also would maintain deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes and charitable donations.
DFL lawmakers failed to secure Senate Republican support for several amendments to the bill, including removing a provision that would automatically reduce income tax rates when the state is projected to have a surplus. Other amendments that failed to gain majority support would have redirected estate tax relief to increase funding for safe schools and the Working Family Tax Credit.
