26:26Now PlayingThe Minnesota Senate dedicated its Thursday, May 3, to debating the Republican tax plan, which, according to Senate Republicans, would 2.1 million Minnesotans to keep more of their income. The bill would reduce income taxes for 82 percent of Minnesota families, prevent tax increases for nearly all Minnesotans and cut the lowest income tax bracket by a quarter of a percent. It also would maintain deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes and charitable donations.
A controversial provision of the bill would reduce income tax rates when the state budget forecast projects a budget surplus. An amendment offered by Senator Richard Cohen, DFL-St. Paul, to remove the provision failed to win Senate approval.
