1:04:00Now PlayingA proposed amendment that would allow schools to display the national motto "In God We Trust" won the approval of the Senate by a vote of 38-29. The action came during an extended floor debate Tuesday, May 1, on the E-12 education policy bill.
Senator Dan Hall, R-Burnsville, sponsor of the amendment, said "It seems like God and Country are no longer lifted in places of honor. Too often God and Country are seen as jokes or ridicule...Our national motto can bring us back to a freedom of faith, even in our schools."
Speaking against the amendment, said Senator Melisa Franzen, DFL-Edina, said, "I believe there is a place for religious sentiment and religious slogans and monuments...and that should be the privacy of our own homes, not in the public sphere of our agencies, particular not our public schools."
