22:54Now PlayingA resolution asking Congress to fund the construction of veterans homes in Bemidji, Montevideo, and Preston won the approval of the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy Committee Thursday, February 7. The committee's review of the proposal, sponsored by Senator Justin Eichorn, R-Grand Rapids, generated passionate debate on whether beds are best located in metropolitan or rural areas.
Representing the DFL Veterans Caucus, Tom Diamond told the committee that building veterans homes in new, rural areas will result in the reduction of beds available at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis. "If these facilities are funded, there's a cap on the number of beds that are available. We can't put those beds back in Minneapolis, because we would exceed the cap," he argued. He further explained that the demand for skilled beds is greater in the metro area than the rural areas, where demand may not result in homes filled to capacity.
Senator Andrew Lang, R-Olivia, took exception to Diamond's contention. "We will never house all the veterans. We know that...all we try to do is to get a little piece of it, so we can give our veterans a little tiny bit," he said.
