1:17:35Now PlayingWhen Governor Mark Dayton vetoed the 2018 supplemental budget bill, one of the many unresolved issues included funds for improving the security of the state's election system.
A bill authorized by Senate Elections Chair Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake, appropriates about $2 million dollars for efforts under the Help America Vote Act, but falls below the $6.6 million amount requested from Secretary of State Steve Simon. According to Simon, Minnesota is the only state that has not secured the entire amount of federal dollars available to make the state and nation's voting systems safe from foreign hackers.
In response to Secretary Simon's concern, Senator Kiffmeyer said her bill provides the first installment originally agreed to by the 2018 legislature and the remaining amount will be reviewed this session.
