28:04Now PlayingTen years ago, a bipartisan commission issued a report with the goal of ending poverty by 2020. Noting that little progress has been made toward that goal, a number of DFL lawmakers and faith leaders called a press conference at the Capitol to highlight a renewed effort generated through a package of proposals intended to move Minnesotans out of poverty.
Presented by former commission co-chairs Senator John Marty, DFL-Roseville, and Representative Carlos Mariani, DFL-St. Paul, the package would establish s $16 per hour minimum wage; double the Working Familiy Tax Credit; eliminate the waiting list for the Child Care Assistance Program; and increase the Minnesota Family Investment Program grants by $300 per month.
To help fund the initiatives, the package would impose tax collections at 6.2 percent on earned income above $132,900 per year. According to the lawmakers, the federal government collects 6.2 percent on wages up to $132,900, but not above that amount.
