33:31Now PlayingIn an attempt to raise the understanding of American civics, a bipartisan group of lawmakers announced Tuesday, February 26, measures that would foster civic education among high school students.
"...the strength of our democracy is based upon its citizenry, and the key thing is that our citizens be engaged--they understand how their government works--that's important to the strength of a democracy," said Senate bill sponsor Carla Nelson, R-Rochester.
Specifically, the bill would require school districts to offer civic courses for credit to high school juniors and seniors. It also requires data to be collected on students' success rates with the already-administered 50 question civics test.
