1:15:36Now PlayingGovernor Tim Walz and legislative leaders participated in the annual Forum News Service's legislative preview, conducted with the State Capitol press corps via Zoom Wednesday, February 2. The discussion quickly focused on the recent Richfield school shooting and legislative proposals designed to curb rising crime rates.
In addressing the issue, Governor Walz stated that public safety will be a top priority for the session, and that he is looking for bipartisan and multifaceted solutions. Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller, R-Winona, said that policymakers need to “get tough on crime,” and that the Senate GOP Caucus would propose increasing funds to recruit additional police officers.
Senate Minority Leader Melisa López Franzen, DFL-Edina, said that the Senate DFL Caucus is calling for the implementation of crime prevention strategies, specifically youth intervention. Franzen also expressed the need to fund “wrap around” services in housing and education as part of the crime prevention process.
When asked about gun control, Walz said that it is one part of a complex issue, and that he is open to having conversations about it. Miller stated that it is unlikely that gun control will move through the Senate this session.
Infrastructure, the Republican tax cut proposal, labor issues, inflation, the audit of the MN Department of Education and Southwest Light Rail also were discussed during the 90 minute forum.
