4:06Now PlayingKalyan-Dombivali corporation has emerged as the new hotspot in the MMR region with over 400 cases increasing in the past couple of days. On Wednesday it reported 498 new cases. Corporation has declared complete lockdown till July 19.
The region has now overtaken Thane by reporting a total of 14,074 cases so far while there are 6295 active cases.
Residents and activists say despite the corporation receiving a warning from the central government that cases may surge in June, no steps were taken to curb the spread. Residents have blamed the lack of preparedness by the Corporation to fight COVID.
PROBLEMS:
- Violation of lockdown rules: despite corporation stating complete lockdown, It looks like a usual Thursday morning with plenty of vehicles on roads, people moving freely, etc
- Even after four months, the corporation has failed to get ONE lab of its own to conduct COVID tests
- Only 30,000 testings done in the last four months (way too less)
- COVID test reports take more than 36 hours to arrive from other private labs (which delays the process of contact tracing)
- only 4400 beds for a population of 18 lakh at 20 health centres
MEASURES TAKEN TOO LATE:
- in the first week of July, they started complete lockdown
- the decision to take over 80% beds in private hospitals for COVID patients (early this week)
- formed a squad to look into complaints of hospitals overcharging
- chase the virus: following Dharavi model of doing door to door survey of 50-60 houses every day and testing symptomatic patients
- isolating more than 10 people behind one positive patient
