The farm laws right from the beginning saw a massive protest, not just by the farmers across the country, but also by the oppositions. According to the opposition ministers, these farm laws were not made keeping in mind the farmers, as they have no guarantee of the MSP. The farmers continue to stage protests across the states, even though these bills have received President’s assent and have now become laws. The Shiromani Akali Dal has broken the 23-year-old alliance with the NDA government and Harsimrat Kaur Badal has also resigned because of these farm bills.
However, opposition parties continue to fight and the Congress government in Punjab has said that they will not implement the farm bills in the state and that they are planning to knock the doors of the top court against three legislations. While one of the Kerala MP from Thrissur has already taken the matter to the SC, the government adds that they will also take up the matter in the court as well.
But do the states have an option of not implementing these farm laws? To get a legal perspective on this matter, Sidharth Luthra presents a clear picture in front of us. Former Additional Solicitor General Sidharth Luthra adds that there really is not much of a choice that is left with the states, given that the powers balance between state and the centre.
