Adar Poonawalla, the Chief Executive Officer of the Serum Institute of India, which is conducting trials of the COVID-19 vaccine. Adar Poonawalla on Saturday raised questions regarding the country’s plan to produce and distribute shots against the coronavirus disease.
Adar Poonawalla stated that the government needs a budget of 80,000 crores and a plan to deliver the process of vaccinating a billion people.
Phase 3 trials of the vaccine have been developed by Oxford University and British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, the vaccine is underway in India as part of a production and testing deal with the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII). Adar Poonawalla tweeted over how the government of India has to manage a fund of 80,000 crores available, over the next one year. He further added that is what the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare needs to buy and distribute the vaccine to everyone in India. This is the next concerning the challenge we need to tackle. He asked the question because as a country, India needs to plan and guide the vaccine manufacturers both in India and overseas to service the needs of our country in terms of procurement and distribution.
Sujata Rao, Former Health Secretary says, By the time the COVID-19 vaccine really gets into the market, it is quite possible the caseload might reduce and we may be getting into herd immunity. In which case, the uptake of the vaccine by the people might be problematic,”.
