3:52Now PlayingIn the politically charged Kerala gold smuggling scandal, a charge sheet filed last month by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) reveals how key players, PS Sarith Kumar and Swapna Suresh, used the UAE Consulate General's seal and letter pad in Thiruvananthapuram to grant forged letters of authorisation for the smuggling of gold through diplomatic cargo.
According to the charge sheet, when Sarith, who served as a Consulate Public Relations Officer between September 2016 and September 2019, was given responsibility for clearing diplomats' import shipments, he discovered that consignments from the Consulate had been exempted from customs inspections.
It was the UAE Consul General who, having found the same in April 2020, had written to various authorities, including the Customs, about Sarith's forgery activities. The UAE announced that Sarith himself had resigned from the PRO job in September 2019.
