2:29Now PlayingOn Friday, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami declared in the run-up, to the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls that cases registered during the Jallikattu protests in the state will soon be withdrawn. However, he said cases would not be removed, for those relating to police brutality and vandalism.
Polls for the Tamil Nadu Assembly are expected to take place later this year.
Jallikattu, a centuries-old sport of bull-taming, is celebrated in Pongal during the second week of January.
In 2014, after the Citizens for Humane Treatment of Animals filed a plea, the Supreme Court outlawed Jallikattu. After protests from the citizens of Tamil Nadu, however, the ban was lifted in 2017, saying the event is a crucial part of their community.
