Himanta Biswa Sarma who is currently the Assam Health Minister, was unanimously elected as the legislative party leader by BJP MLAs during a meeting of the BJP Legislature Party. This meeting was attended by Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party General Secretary Arun Singh as central observers. Baijayant Panda, BJP's Assam in-charge was also present on the occasion. In the recently-concluded Assam polls, the ruling BJP alliance registered a landmark victory, becoming the first non-Congress government in the state to retain power for the second consecutive term.
