The Maharashtra Assembly today passed the Shakti Bill, aiming to provide stringent punishment for crimes against women and children. The bill contains the death penalty for rape and gang rape and a time limit of 30 days to complete the probe. Also, the bill mentions 10 lakhs in compensation for acid attack survivors. Similar laws have been passed in various states protecting the rights of women, but unfortunately, incidents of rape and acid attacks still continue across the country. Lalitha K stresses the need for various police and judicial reforms and the proper implementation of the law that has been passed.
