10:50Now PlayingAs the Centre introduced a bill to merge the three municipal corporations in the national capital in the Lok Sabha earlier this week, Opposition leaders have cried foul, contending that this is an attempt to stall the civic body elections. While it remains unclear when exactly the polls will take place, the proposal to revise the total number of wards in Delhi would necessitate a delimitation exercise. In this case, it could take several months or even more than a year to hold the polls. Even as the Opposition claims that it is beyond the legislative competence of Parliament, the Bill seeks a merger of all three bodies. Currently, the three corporations in Delhi -- North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) -- have 272 wards. While the North and South corporations have 104 wards each, the East corporation has 64.
