China's severe zero-COVID policy has stoked public frustration. There are severe lockdowns, lengthy quarantines, and mass-testing campaigns. Last week two regions in China saw deadly fire outbreaks leaving at least 50 dead. The aftermath of the fire became a fresh catalyst for public anger. Many blamed Covid lockdowns for hampering rescue efforts. On November 26, at least 400 protesters gathered in Beijing. The protesters chanted "We are all Xinjiang people! Go Chinese people!" In many places, authorities clashed with groups of protesters leaving many injured and detained. Meanwhile, Chinese police have assaulted and detained a TV reporter in Shanghai. The broadcaster said that its journalist was there in Shanghai to cover the protest. The international broadcaster has also released a video of its journalist getting detained.
