16:17Now PlayingIn this episode of The Urban Debate, the host Shreya Dhoundial will be discussing how thousands of people protested against the harsh "Zero-COVID-19" policy in Shanghai over the weekend, sparking large-scale demonstrations. During the large-scale protests, slogans calling for "freedom" could be heard alongside demands for Xi Jinping's resignation. A journalist reporting the events was allegedly attacked by police, who then released him after holding him for several hours. On Monday, up from 39,506 the day before, China registered 40,052 new local cases, setting a record for the fifth consecutive day. Guangzhou and Chongqing, two megacities, are having difficulty controlling epidemics. In an effort to quell growing unrest for political freedoms and an end to Covid lockdowns, Chinese security officers detained individuals and appeared to thwart a planned protest on Monday.
