36:16Now PlayingIn this episode of Beyond The Headlines, the host Tamanna Inamdar will be discussing how Saket Gokhale, the national spokesperson for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was detained by Gujarat police on Tuesday in Ahmedabad as a result of a complaint filed by a senior BJP official with the Ahmedabad cyber crime cell. The Gujarat police apprehended Gokhale in Jaipur and transported him to Ahmedabad, where a magistrate court ordered that he remain in police detention until December 8. According to the police, a complaint from Bhalabhai Kothari of Ahmedabad, who claimed to be a "senior BJP functionary who was disturbed by Gokhale's tweet," resulted in the filing of a FIR at the cyber cell on December 1 for offences of forgery, tweeting defamatory content, and fear-mongering under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Five days after the suspension bridge was reopened following renovations, it fell on the Machchu River on October 30, killing 135 people in Morbi. On November 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to the tragedy's scene while he was in Gujarat.
We are joined by a few panelists.
"If BJP thinks Saket Gokhale is a repeat offender, there should be different F.I.Rs. But, can't arrest him for tweeting, it was a mistake," said Tehseen Poonawalla, Political Analyst.
"Saket Gokhale's intention is pretty clear, he wasn't mislead. He was warned but he did not delete the tweet," said Author Karan Verma.
"What is Saket Gokhale's crime? Is quoting a newspaper's report crime? Amit Malviya should be arrested first for spreading Fake News," said Monojit Mondal, TMC.
"Saket Gokhale's arrest is not political vendetta," said Shishir Bajoria, BJP.
