28:27Now PlayingIn this episode of Urban Debate, the host Shreya Dhoundial will be discussing how the Delhi High Court noted on December 6 that the 'final judgement' in abortion cases should take into account a woman's decision to give birth as well as the potential for a child to live a decent life. This was done by allowing a 26-year-old married woman to abort her 33-week pregnancy. The woman, whose unborn child has brain abnormalities, was given permission by Justice Prathiba M. Singh to have her pregnancy medically terminated as soon as possible at any authorised medical institution or hospital of her choosing. There is a glimmer of optimism in India at a time when millions of women have lost their right to a safe abortion in the United States. The Delhi High Court has held that the mother has the final say in situations involving prenatal abnormalities. Watch The Urban Debate with Shreya Dhoundial.

Advocate Anwesh Madhukar, Counsel of the petitioner explains the judgement
"When Abortion is legal for only certain conditions, it's very disproportionate," said Vinitha Jayaprakasan, Senior Programme Officer, Safe Abortion for Everyone.
"It's a landmark judgement. Completely in favour of giving the Abortion choice to mother in cases involving fetal abnormalities," said Dr. Sanjeev Bagai, Chairperson, Nephron.
"Thankful to the court to pass this law, it's practical to terminate in cases involving fetal abnormalities," says Gargi Bhattacharya, Chief Trustee, Zain Foundation.
