Supreme Court Upholds Legality Of Demonetisation With 4:1 Judgement | Beyond The Headline

The Supreme Court upheld the Narendra Modi government's decision to demonetize currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations in 2016. A five-judge Constitution bench dismissed a batch of petitions challenging the decision with a 4:1 majority, stating that the decision, as the executive's economic policy, could not be reversed. The bench, led by Justice S. A. Nazeer, stated that the Center's decision-making process could not have been flawed because the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Union government were consulted. According to the Supreme Court, there was a reasonable connection to bring such a measure, and we hold that demonetization was not affected by the doctrine of proportionality. The guest for this episode, Aswani Kumar Dubey (Advocate SC), said, "This is a move towards a digital economy. There was a lot of black money in the country, and that has reduced significantly."
