Under pressure from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for referring to former Pakistan President and Chief of Army Staff Pervez Musharraf, who died on Sunday, as "a great force for peace," senior Congress lawmaker Shashi Tharoor struck back today. "If Musharraf was anathema to all patriotic Indians, then why did the BJP Government negotiate a truce with him in 2003 and sign the joint Vajpayee-Musharraf declaration in 2004? Was he not regarded as a credible peace partner at the time?" On Sunday, Mr Tharoor tweeted. He questioned why the previous BJP government, led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, agreed to a cease-fire with Mr Musharraf. Shashi Tharoor had previously stated that he was "raised in an India where you are required to speak lovingly of people when they die," in response to strong criticism from top BJP officials over his condolence message. Soon after word of his death broke, the Congress MP's initial sympathy tweet sparked a barrage of accusations and counter-accusations.
