The judge, whose retirement is scheduled for August, has been the subject of controversy owing to his repeated criticisms of the governing TMC, Abhishek Banerjee, and his own colleagues. The judge made his remark the day after the BJP unveiled its initial list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, some of whom are from West Bengal, even though he has not yet formally tendered his resignation. Justice Gangopadhyay, whose TV appearances in the past infuriated the Supreme Court, claimed that taunts from the TMC were the reason for his decision to enter politics.
