2:37Now PlayingOn September 14th, 2015 a gravitational wave passed through Earth. Yesterday, on February 11, 2016, after months of effort, scientists working with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) were finally able to confirm that they had in fact detected a gravitational wave which had resulted from the collision of two black holes over a billion light years away. The discovery confirmed a major prediction made by Albert Einstein in his 1915 General Theory of Relativity. In this segment, recorded for an upcoming Cosmic Queries episode of StarTalk Radio, host Neil deGrasse Tyson, guest astrophysicist Charles Liu, and comic co-host Eugene Mirman explain what causes gravitational waves, how they affect the fabric of space-time, and how we were able to detect them.
