We found multiple of them in the same dive. 🐙
These are among the rarest deep-sea encounters on record. Specifically, the dumbo octopus is known for the ear-like fins they use to move through the water, most species have been documented only once.
Spoiler alert: we spotted 20 of them in a single dive.
This sighting happened during the first dedicated deep-sea survey of the Seychelles' outer islands, led by local scientists including marine biologist Sheena Talma. 96% of Seychelles waters is deep ocean. Almost none of it has been formally studied, and the data from dives like this is what makes real ocean protection possible.
