Bongo nets are paired, cone-shaped nets towed through the water column to collect plankton, the tiny drifting organisms that form the foundation of the entire marine food chain.
By studying plankton, scientists can learn how much life the water may be supporting, where fish are spawning , and how their larvae move through the ecosystem.
In Palau, one of the most biodiverse marine regions on Earth, even what drifts through the water column matters.
Each sample helps build a clearer picture of the life these waters support.
