Azra Jafari became the first female mayor in Afghanistan following her appointment to the Mayorship of Nili, Daykundi Province, in 2008. Whilst a refugee in Iran, Jafari served as Editor-in-Chief of the Afghan cultural magazine Farhang and established a school for the children of Afghan refugees.
Following her return to Afghanistan, Jafari was a member of the Loya Jirga under the Karzai administration and was the sole female co-author of the new Constitution of Afghanistan in 2003. She authored I Am A Working Woman, holds a degree in midwifery, and has won numerous awards for her commitment to social development.
