As the daughter of two Holocaust survivors and the grandson of an SS officer, Dr Noemie Lopian and Mr Derek Niemann form an unlikely alliance. They aim to speak across the divide by sharing their stories as a warning against the perils of extremism, and how ordinary people can descend into the service of an evil regime. This discussion will explore what it means to grow up in the shadow of the Holocaust, why and how the Holocaust remains relevant today, and why the Holocaust must never be forgotten.

Noemi Lopian is a holocaust educator and campaigner. The daughter of holocaust survivors Dr Ernst and Renee Bornstein, Lopian has published her father’s memoirs in The Long Night. She has dedicated much of her life to commemorating the Holocaust in memory of her parents.

2. Derek Niemann

Derek Niemann is a writer and editor who specialises in natural history. Upon discovering that his grandfather had been an SS officer he researched the connection and authored the short story A Nazi in the Family.
