Right now, immigrant families with children are locked inside a Texas detention center, sleeping twelve to a room under lights that never turn off and eating food infested with worms. 🚨 A recent article in The New York Times explains that Representative Joaquin Castro of Texas has been making repeated visits to the Dilley Immigration Processing Center to fight for the release of detained families. Dilley is the largest family detention site in the country. It was shut down in 2024 but reopened last year. One detained family included two teenage boys who were celebrated mariachi musicians, even invited by their own Republican congresswoman to perform at the Capitol and visit the White House. Despite posing zero threat, the entire family was locked up. Castro’s pressure campaign is having an impact. Detainee numbers at Dilley dropped from eleven hundred in January to about four hundred and fifty, and the family mentioned earlier was released just hours after his most recent visit. ⚖️ But the stories coming out of Dilley go far beyond one family. Lawmakers described a nineteen-year-old pregnant woman who was not getting enough food, and whose doctor said her baby stopped growing. They also reported a toddler with an untreated infected tooth and a woman vomiting blood who was told to calm down. These are not criminals. These are families who came to the United States, most of them seeking asylum, and they are being punished for it. 📄 This is why experienced legal representation matters. When advocates and attorneys push hard enough, people can get released, conditions get exposed, and the system is forced to respond. Federal courts, congressional pressure, and experienced attorneys are forcing the system to bend. And that is the kind of fight every detained family deserves. If a loved one gets detained, we may be able to help. To learn more, send me the word “CONSULT” in a direct message.
