After more than four weeks in immigration detention, a Venezuelan emergency room doctor is finally back with her family. 🩺 The New York Times reports that Dr. Rubelis Bolivar was released on a seven thousand dollar bond after immigration agents arrested her at a South Texas airport while she was traveling with her five-year-old daughter, a US citizen, to her asylum interview in California. Dr. Bolivar is a resident physician in the Rio Grande Valley, one of the most medically underserved regions in the country. ⚖️ Her detention sparked outrage from medical associations because her hospital is already short on doctors and the patients she treats depend on her care. She’s now back home with an ankle monitor and is expected to return to her residency. 🚨 But she’s not alone. At least five foreign-born doctors have been detained in recent months while hospitals across the country struggle with visa pauses and immigration restrictions affecting physicians from countries like Venezuela, Iran, Nigeria, and Sudan. When the government detains the doctors keeping rural hospitals open, American patients suffer too. Dr. Bolivar is free because people refused to stay silent and because she kept fighting her case.
