Setting out to learn “what life in classrooms was really like,” Baker faced a “noisy, distracted, crazy-making reality.” For the students, the day was simply long; for teachers, it was a constant struggle to keep classes engaged. Yet overall such challenges were stimulating, and Baker offers a lively and insightful report from “one fairly typical, not-terribly-poor-but-hardly-rich school district.”
