as posted by the channelMacy, a longtime Roanoke Times reporter, won national recognition with Factory Man, her award-winning profile of Virginia’s Bassett Furniture Company, which starkly portrayed the local effects of globalization. Her second book focuses on the rural tobacco town of Truevine, Virginia, where in 1899 two sons of a black sharecropper were kidnapped for the circus. On tour, George and Willie Muse, both under ten, became Eko and Ito. They traveled the world and performed for royalty, but were forced into demeaning roles as freaks and even Martians. Reunited with their family nearly thirty years later, the brothers continued to work in side shows. Macy’s account is both a fast-paced narrative and a deeply disturbing picture of racist exploitation.
