Today more than one in seven children is diagnosed with ADHD, and the number is steadily rising. Many experts believe this rate is already higher than is statistically probable, and Schwarz’s investigation is as much a socio-cultural analysis as it is a medical one. Tracing the history of the disorder and its treatments, Schwarz profiles many key figures in the debate, including the Ritalin pioneer Dr. Keith Conners, who now has second thoughts about the ubiquitous prescriptions, as well as pharmacists, drug manufacturers, and ADHD patients who struggle as much with the effects of medication as they do with their condition. Schwarz’s comprehensive study does for ADHD what his award-winning New York Times series did for raising awareness of concussions among football players.
