The action begins in the fall of 2013, when Haris, an Iraqi-American, is frustrated in his efforts to cross into Syria to fight. He finds an ally in the wife of a former Syrian revolutionary; she wants to go back, but her husband does not. As ISIS steadily gains power, Haris must decide where he needs to be and what battles he should fight.
