Holly Nicholas of TheRebel.Media reports:
Leela Aheer, Wildrose MLA for Chestermere-Rocky View and shadow minister for energy has tabled recall legislation in the form of Bill 206.
Recall legislation would allow for constituents in a riding to collect signatures in order to force a by election in the event that they were unsatisfied with their MLA. The signatories would have to be residents in Alberta for the last 6 months and be a registered voter. In order for the petition to be successful, 20% (or approximately 6,000) of the voting population would have to sign in each riding. Of course, it’s not just that simple – there are other rules such as paying a $5000 application fee.
The Wildrose Party has supported this legislation since 2012 – it was part of their election platform. And the bill is non-partisan – any MLA could be challenged with the recall petition.
In just 7 months, the NDP have managed to wage a war on the oil and gas industry now with Bill 6, the response of 1000’s of farmers across the province shows that many would likely support recall. The decision on this bill is going to say a lot about how comfortable the NDP government are. And I think they have a lot to worry about.
