Sam Rayburn is one of my political heroes. Why? He was a key proponent of rural electrification in the US. By sponsoring the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 and the Rural Electrification Act of 1936, he changed America. Born poor in rural Texas, he went on to be the longest-serving Speaker of the House of Representatives. He famously said, “I want me people out of the mud and I want my people out of the dark.”
