New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani says the city must stop what has become a “reverse Great Migration” as Black New Yorkers leave because they can no longer afford housing, child care and daily life in New York City.
Mamdani told Roland Martin that more than 200,000 Black New Yorkers have left the city over the last few decades and that the population of Black children and teenagers declined by 19% from 2010 to 2019. He outlined plans to build 200,000 new affordable homes, preserve 200,000 existing affordable homes and protect older Black homeowners through the city’s first Office of Deed Theft Prevention.
He also said his tax agenda would not burden fixed-income homeowners. Instead, he wants the wealthiest New Yorkers, the most profitable corporations and non-residents who own second homes worth more than $5 million to pay more.
On national politics, Mamdani said Democrats must stop lecturing voters about why elections matter and start earning their interest and support with clear policies connected to housing, groceries, child care and everyday economic struggles.
Roland Martin and the RMU panel also examine the backlash against Mamdani, the role of wealth in American politics and why race and class cannot be separated from the economic realities facing Black Americans.
