New Black voter research shows Democrats’ one-size-fits-all political messaging is failing younger Black voters, especially Black Gen Z.

Roland Martin talks with HIT Strategies President and Founding Partner Terrance Woodbury about new Black voter data revealing a major generational divide in Black political engagement.

Woodbury says attacks on voting rights are activating Black voters, with 65% saying those attacks make them more likely to vote and 75% reporting that they have taken at least three actions to combat voter suppression.

But the research also shows Democrats have a serious messaging problem with younger Black voters. Woodbury says, “Democrats have to stop defending democracy, stop defending democracy. That is not a winning message. That does not mean that we abandon democracy.”

He explains that many Black Gen Z voters do not feel democracy has delivered for them and that Democrats must connect political issues to jobs, debt, family, community and personal economic pain.

Woodbury also warns that Republicans are paying trusted online influencers to target young Black men with messages of hopelessness, withdrawal and resentment, while Democrats still rely too heavily on one-size-fits-all messaging and celebrity endorsements.

The data shows that anti-Trump sentiment does not automatically translate into support for Democrats. Woodbury says voters need something to vote for, not just something to vote against.
