Black woman slams JP Morgan Chase with discrimination, sexual harassment lawsuit

Roland Martin talks with former JP Morgan Chase Vice President Rashida Winfrey and her attorney, Tanvir Rahman, about her discrimination and sexual harassment lawsuit against the bank.

Winfrey says JPMorgan Chase recruited her after announcing a $30 billion commitment to help close the racial wealth gap. She alleges that the mission presented publicly did not match what happened internally.

According to Winfrey, Black business owners were disparaged, discouraged from applying for lending and treated as problems when they questioned the bank’s racial-equity results. Her lawsuit also alleges that lending to minority communities fell below JPMorgan Chase’s 2019 baseline despite the bank’s public commitment to provide additional support.

Winfrey describes an internal culture in which leaders allegedly questioned why Black people believed the bank owed them anything. She also says a proposed Juneteenth marketing strategy compared Black entrepreneurs networking with enslaved people using the Underground Railroad.

Winfrey says she challenged those practices, reported harassment and ultimately faced retaliation and termination. Her attorney says the lawsuit seeks to hold JPMorgan Chase accountable for the harm she experienced.
