Black Secret Service Agent Accused In Brutal Kappa Hazing. Roland: “That Ain’t Brotherhood.”

A federal agent entrusted with protecting lives is now accused of taking part in a violent fraternity hazing incident that left two pledges hospitalized. Roland Martin says no letters, tradition or claim of brotherhood can turn beatings with canes and paddles into anything other than abuse.

A U.S. Secret Service agent has been placed on administrative leave after he and two other men were accused in a violent Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity hazing incident. Investigators allege that pledges were subjected to prolonged and repeated beatings with canes and paddles after failing to answer questions about the organization correctly. Two people were hospitalized, and one victim reportedly suffered kidney failure and required surgery.

Roland Martin condemns the violence and rejects the culture that treats physical abuse as proof that someone completed a “real process.” He says there is no aspect of beating people into a fraternity that can be called brotherhood. Roland also warns that continued hazing drives up insurance costs, damages the reputations of Black Greek-letter organizations and could eventually place the organizations themselves in jeopardy.

Texas State Representative Jolanda Jones shares that an incident occurred while she was pledging as an undergraduate and says it took time afterward to feel that she truly belonged to a sisterhood. She argues that lifelong bonds, service and commitment can be built without anyone putting their hands on another person. Dr. Omékongo Dibinga says violence is not love, respect or camaraderie. It is straight-up abuse.
