Right-wing attacks on diversity in medical education are colliding with a healthcare system where fewer than 5% of U.S. physicians are Black and racial disparities continue to cost lives.
Roland Martin speaks with Dr. Willie Underwood III, the 181st president of the American Medical Association, about why representation in medicine is a matter of survival. Underwood explains that Black patients often experience better outcomes with Black physicians, including higher newborn survival rates, stronger preventive-care adherence and greater trust in treatment.
The conversation also confronts racist medical myths that Black patients feel less pain or are seeking drugs when they ask for relief. Underwood says unequal care contributes to 86,000 additional Black deaths and costs the country hundreds of billions of dollars every year.
Roland and Underwood also examine the shortage of physicians, threats to Black medical pipelines, the burden of medical-school debt and the danger of weakening the institutions and training needed to serve Black communities. The warning is clear: attacking DEI in medicine does not remove bias. It protects the conditions that keep killing Black patients.

Black Star Network Partner: Chapter
Chapter and its affiliates are not connected with or endorsed by any government entity or the federal Medicare program. Chapter Advisory, LLC represents Medicare Advantage HMO, PPO, and PFFS organizations and stand alone prescription drug plans that have a Medicare contract. Enrollment depends on the plan’s contract renewal. While we have a database of every Medicare plan nationwide and can help you to search among all plans, we have contracts with many but not all plans. As a result, we do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 50 organizations which offer 18,160 products nationwide. We search and recommend all plans, even those we don’t directly offer. You can contact a licensed Chapter agent to find out the number of products available in your specific area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-Medicare, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all of your options
