Gas prices, food costs, schools, healthcare, policing and public services are all shaped by political decisions. Roland Martin leads a full RMU panel discussion with Dr. Omékongo Dibinga, senior professorial lecturer at American University’s School of International Service and author of Lies About Black People; Thelma Anderson, creator of The Public Opinion Court and author of Shut Up and Prosecute; and Jolanda Jones, Texas state representative and lawyer.

Anderson argues that Democratic officials cannot expect voters to stay engaged while failing to communicate consistently through media, social platforms and trusted community voices. Jones explains that people trying to pay rent, buy groceries and care for their families may not have the time or resources to connect every hardship to a political decision. She also details her listening sessions, where Black voters tell the Democratic Party what it must do to earn their vote and learn how they can help move legislation.

Dibinga challenges the idea that every struggle is simply a personal failure. He points to underfunded schools, rising food prices, unequal policing and other policy-driven conditions while warning that there are people actively working to make life worse. The panel’s message is clear: Black media, elected officials and organizers must make politics accessible, record these conversations, turn them into livestreams and short-form clips, and take the message outside the room.
