Nearly 30 years after the murder of Tupac Shakur, a Nevada jury convicted Dwayne Davis of first-degree murder after about three hours of deliberation.
Roland Martin noted that Davis had acknowledged in interviews and in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, that he was in the Cadillac from which the gunfire erupted during the 1996 drive-by shooting. Davis later claimed he had only made those statements to sell books, but the panel questioned how he could repeatedly tell versions of the story and then expect a jury to disregard them.
Civil rights attorney Joe Richardson said Davis had a serious problem because his statements remained consistent on the key issue of being in the car and handing the gun over. The panel repeatedly returned to the same point: Davis kept talking. One panelist called it “self snitching on yourself,” another said “Just keep your mouth shut, bro,” and Mustafa Santiago Ali summed it up with four words: “Loose lips sink ships.”
The verdict also brought an emotional moment for members of Tupac Shakur's family, who were visibly moved as the conviction was announced. Davis is being held without bail, and his sentencing is set for October 13.
